Concord sits near the center of Cabarrus County in the Piedmont, about 20 miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte and roughly halfway between Charlotte and Salisbury. It is the second-largest city in the Charlotte area and the county seat. I-85 runs through the city eight lanes wide; US 29 and US 601 cross it; NC 73 comes off its I-85 interchange into downtown, where it meets US 601 and NC 3; and NC 49 bypasses the city, a route it has taken since 1953.

Concord is home to Charlotte Motor Speedway, the 1.5-mile quad-oval that has held races since 1960 and had room for 95,000 people in 2021, to zMax Dragway and to Concord Mills; I-485 meets US 29 to give access to the Speedway and Concord Mills. Concord-Padgett Regional Airport, owned by the city, is a reliever airport for Charlotte Douglas.
