Auto glass repair in Concord, NC: every pane on the car

Auto glass repair in Concord, NC covers more than the windshield. A car has a windshield, door windows, small fixed quarter windows and the back glass, and each is made and fitted differently. Impex Auto Glass works on all of them, and it does the work where the car is: Impex has no shop in Concord, so a technician comes to your home or work instead. The nearest Impex shop is in Charlotte.

This page is the starting point when you know the car has broken glass but not exactly which job it is. It explains which glass can be repaired and which has to be replaced, how long each job takes, which ones need a camera calibration afterwards, and how the cost is usually handled through insurance in North Carolina.

Two kinds of glass on one car

The windshield is laminated: two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them. When a stone hits it, the outer layer chips or cracks and the windshield stays in one piece. That is why a windshield chip can often be filled with resin and saved.

Door glass and back glass are usually tempered. Impex says tempered back glass shatters when it is damaged, and that most of the time it cannot be safely repaired, so replacement is the answer. A shattered door window is the same: the glass breaks into small pieces and the window is replaced, not repaired.

Auto glass repair Concord NC: the windshield

For the windshield, the first question is always repair or replace. Impex says a repair may be possible when a chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges, and uses a quarter as a rule of thumb for chips. The ROLAGS repair standard lists stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable. Edge cracks, damage in front of the driver and long cracks that are still running usually mean new glass.

The full process for each is on its own page: windshield repair in Concord, NC for chips and short cracks, and windshield replacement in Concord, NC for a new windshield with the camera calibrated after.

Concord auto glass repair for door and quarter windows

A door window usually breaks in one of three ways: a break-in, a stone thrown up from the road, or a door closed on something. The glass falls into the door and onto the seat. Impex says side window replacement takes 30 to 60 minutes and that you can drive the car straight after, because a door window does not need the curing time a windshield does.

Quarter glass, the small fixed window behind a rear door or beside a rear seat, is often bonded in place more like a windshield. Either way the part is matched to the car by VIN before it is ordered. Read door and side window replacement for what the technician does inside the door and how to keep the car dry until the visit.

Back glass and the rear defroster

Back glass carries the defroster lines, and on many cars the radio antenna too. When it shatters, the glass covers the back seat and the cargo area. Impex says back glass replacement takes about one to two hours, that its technicians reconnect and test the rear defroster and other electrical parts during installation, and that you should avoid washing the car or using the rear defroster for 24 hours. More on rear window replacement.

Which jobs need calibration

Calibration follows the sensors, not the glass. Many cars have a forward facing camera at the top of the windshield; I-CAR says it runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control, and that removing the windshield can require it to be aimed again. Impex says ADAS recalibration is typically not needed after a side window replacement, though its technicians check the safety systems.

Front radar is in or behind the bumper or grille. It is aimed after the radar is replaced and may need aiming after bumper or grille removal or front structural repair. See ADAS camera calibration and radar calibration.

Auto glass replacement in Concord and insurance

Glass breakage is a comprehensive loss in North Carolina: the NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass and missiles or falling objects under Other Than Collision coverage, which pays less any deductible. That covers the windshield, the door glass and the back glass alike. NC has no zero-deductible glass law, so your comprehensive deductible applies unless your policy has full glass coverage.

You choose the shop. G.S. 58-3-180 says a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle must let the claimant select the repair service, and that the insurer pays the same whichever is chosen. A break-in may also mean a police report for the insurer; a stone strike usually does not. Impex says it works with all major insurance providers. The insurance page explains a claim from first call to payment.

Keeping the car safe until the glass is replaced

  • Brush broken tempered glass off the seats with a gloved hand or a stiff brush, not a bare hand.
  • Cover an open door or back window with plastic sheeting and tape on the painted frame, not on the glass that is left.
  • Park under cover if rain is coming, and keep the window switch off if the door glass has broken.
  • Photograph the damage before anything is moved, for the insurer.
  • Take valuables and the garage remote out of the car.

Work trucks, vans and company fleets

Concord businesses run vans and pickups that spend all day on I-85, US 29 and the roads around the Speedway and Concord Mills, and a broken windshield or door glass takes a working vehicle off the road. Impex describes itself as fleet focused: it says it stocks common glass parts for fleet customers ahead of time, to cut downtime and avoid supply delays, and that its mission is accurate, transparent and efficient glass service with as little downtime as possible.

For a company vehicle the mobile visit matters most. The technician can come to the yard or the job site, and the quote is checked against each vehicle’s VIN, so a van with a camera or a heated windshield gets the right glass the first time. If you run several vehicles in Concord, say so when you call.

Questions people ask

Can a broken side window be repaired?

Usually not. Door and back glass are tempered and break into small pieces, so the window is replaced. Impex says a side window takes 30 to 60 minutes and you can drive straight after.

Can back glass be repaired?

Impex says most of the time back glass cannot be safely repaired, because tempered glass shatters when it is damaged. It is replaced, and the defroster is reconnected and tested.

Does auto glass repair fix scratches?

Windshield repair resin is made for breaks: stone chips and cracks, the damage the ROLAGS repair standard covers. A scratch is not a break. Ask Impex to look at it before you decide.

Do I need calibration after a door window replacement?

Typically not, according to Impex, though its technicians check the safety systems. Calibration usually follows a new windshield, because the forward camera looks through it.

Is a broken car window covered by insurance in NC?

Glass breakage is listed under comprehensive coverage by the NC Department of Insurance. Your comprehensive deductible applies unless your policy includes full glass coverage, and you choose the shop under G.S. 58-3-180.
