Side window replacement is usually the quickest glass job on a car, and one of the most unpleasant to find. A door window that has been smashed leaves glass on the seat, in the door and on the ground, and the car cannot be locked. Impex Auto Glass replaces door glass and quarter glass at your car in Concord, NC and the towns around it. There is no Impex shop in Concord, so the technician comes to you; the nearest shop is in Charlotte.

Impex says most side window replacements take about 30 to 60 minutes, and that unlike a windshield the car can be driven straight away. This page explains what is done, how the glass is matched, what to do until the visit and how the cost is usually handled.
Door glass and quarter glass
A car has two kinds of side glass. Door glass moves: it slides down into the door on a regulator when you press the switch. Quarter glass is fixed: the small pane behind the rear door or beside the rear seat, often bonded in place. Both are usually tempered glass, which breaks into small pieces across the whole pane, so a broken side window is replaced rather than repaired.
Impex says a side window needs replacing when it is cracked, shattered or will not roll up or down properly, and that even small cracks can compromise safety and should be looked at.
Side window replacement in Concord, step by step
- The glass is matched by VIN. Door glass varies with trim, tint and options. Impex checks the part against the VIN before it is ordered.
- The broken glass is cleared. The technician removes what is left in the frame and vacuums glass out of the seats and the carpet.
- The door is opened up. The door panel comes off so the broken glass can be taken out of the inside of the door, where most of it falls.
- The new glass is fitted. The door glass is set into its channels and fixed to the regulator, or the quarter glass is set and bonded in its frame.
- It is checked. The window is run up and down, the seals are checked and the door panel goes back on.
Drive straight away
Impex says you can drive the car immediately after a side window replacement, because door glass does not need the curing time a windshield does.
Get a side window quote
Say which window broke, the car and where it is parked. Impex will contact you with a quote. The quote form asks where the damage is, then the year, make and model or the VIN, then how to reach you. If you would rather talk it through, call and Impex will take the same details by phone.
Break-ins, stones and closing doors
Most door windows in Concord break in one of three ways. A break-in in a lot or on the street, where the window is smashed to reach a bag or a phone. A stone thrown up on a fast road such as I-85, I-485 or US 29, usually catching the rear quarter glass. Or a door or tailgate closed on something long. The fix is the same; what changes is the paperwork, because a theft usually needs a police report for the insurer.
Until the van arrives
- Photograph the window, the inside of the car and the scene before you clean anything.
- If it was a break-in, report it to the police and note the report number.
- Brush glass off the seat with a gloved hand or a stiff brush; small pieces hide in the seat seams.
- Do not run the window switch on that door: the regulator can bind on broken glass inside the door.
- Cover the opening with plastic sheeting taped to the painted door frame, and park under cover if rain is coming.
- Take valuables and the garage remote out of the car.
Laminated side glass on newer cars
Not every side window is tempered. Some newer cars use laminated glass in the front doors, built like a windshield with a plastic layer between two sheets, to cut road noise and make a break-in slower. Laminated door glass cracks and stays in the frame instead of falling into the door. It is still replaced rather than repaired, and it is a different part from the tempered version of the same door, which is one more reason Impex checks the VIN before ordering. If your broken door window cracked in place rather than shattering, mention it when you call.
The quote before the job
Impex says its quotes are fully inclusive, with no hidden fees, upsells, delivery charges, fuel fees or disposal fees, so vacuuming the glass out of the door and the cabin is part of the job. For a single door window, compare the quote with your comprehensive deductible before you decide whether to claim.
Will the window work afterwards?
The new glass is fitted to the existing regulator and run up and down before the panel goes back on, so you know it works before the technician leaves. If the window had stopped moving before it broke, or the motor makes a grinding sound, say so when you book: the glass and the regulator are separate parts, and Impex can tell you what it would need.
Calibration after side glass
Impex says ADAS recalibration is typically not needed after a side window replacement, though its technicians check the vehicle’s safety systems. Calibration usually follows a new windshield, because the forward camera looks through it; see ADAS camera calibration.
Window tint on new side glass
North Carolina limits tint on side windows. Under G.S. 20-127 the windows other than the windshield must let through at least 35% of light, with a meter reading over 32% presumed to comply, and reflectance of 20% or less; red, yellow and amber films are not allowed. Minivans, pickups and other multipurpose vehicles are excepted behind the driver. Tint was removed from the safety inspection from December 1, 2025, but the limits still apply on the road. A new door glass comes without aftermarket film, so if the old window was tinted, plan to have the new one tinted to match within the law. More in what NC window tint law allows after new glass.
Paying for side glass in North Carolina
Side glass breakage is a comprehensive loss: the NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass under Other Than Collision coverage, which pays less any deductible. With no zero-deductible glass law in NC, your comprehensive deductible applies unless your policy has full glass terms, so for a single door window it is worth comparing the deductible with the quote. You choose the shop under G.S. 58-3-180. Impex says it works with all major insurance providers. Read insurance and claims.
Other glass on the car
Door glass is done where the car is parked: a driveway or garage in Concord, a work lot, or a space in Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Midland or Mount Pleasant. Because the car can be driven straight after, a side window is the easiest job to fit into a working day: the technician can come to the office lot in the morning and the car is ready by lunch. The areas we serve page lists the towns the van covers.
