How long after windshield replacement can you drive? The short answer from Impex Auto Glass is that most windshield replacements take about one hour, plus a short curing period, and that most drivers are back on the road within two hours. The longer answer is that there is no single number for every car, because the time depends on the adhesive and the weather on the day. This guide explains both, with the source for each point, for drivers in Concord, NC and anywhere else.

The short answer
Ask the technician for your car’s drive-away time before they leave. It is set by the adhesive used and the conditions that day, not by a rule of thumb.
What drive-away time means
The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) defines the minimum drive-away time as the length of time the vehicle should remain stationary after any auto glass installation to allow proper bonding. In plain words: the time the new glass needs to sit, still, before the car is safe to drive.
The Council says these times vary by the type and brand of adhesive used, the atmospheric conditions at the time of replacement and many other factors. That is why no honest installer gives one figure for every job.

Why the bond matters so much
A windshield is not a window that keeps out the wind. The AGSC says the windshield and side glass are part of the vehicle’s passenger restraint system and must be installed properly for airbags to deploy safely and effectively, and that the windshield aids in occupant retention: it helps keep the people in the car inside it in a crash.
On many cars the passenger airbag inflates up against the windshield. If the bond is still soft, the glass can move when it should hold. Driving before the drive-away time is not about a little rattle or a leak: it is about the glass doing its job in the one moment it matters.

The standard behind it
The industry’s installation standard is ANSI/AGSC/AGRSS 005-2022, the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard. It was amended in 1999, 2002, 2015, 2018 and 2022. It is a different document from the repair standard for chips and cracks, ROLAGS (ANSI/AGSC/NWRD/ROLAGS 002-2022), which is the one that sets what damage can be repaired.

Book a windshield replacement
Send the car and the damage. Impex will contact you with a quote and tell you how long to leave the car for your job. The quote form asks where the damage is, then the year, make and model or the VIN, then how to reach you. If you would rather talk it through, call and Impex will take the same details by phone.
What changes the time
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The adhesive | Urethanes differ by type and brand, and each has its own cure time. The AGSC names this first. |
| Temperature and humidity | The AGSC names atmospheric conditions at the time of replacement as a factor. A cold, damp morning and a warm afternoon are not the same job. |
| Rain | The adhesive needs a clean, dry frame to bond to, which is why a mobile job in steady rain moves to a garage or another time. |
| Everything else | The AGSC adds that many other factors play a part. The installer knows the product used and the day’s conditions, which is why the installer sets the time for your car. |
| What else is done | A camera calibration adds time to the visit. Impex says most calibrations take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. |

How long does windshield replacement take, start to finish?
Impex gives several timings on its own pages. Taken together, they give a fair picture of how long to leave the car:
| Job | Impex’s timing | When you can drive |
|---|---|---|
| Windshield replacement | About one hour; its auto glass page gives 30 minutes to 2 hours, often 45 to 60 minutes on standard vehicles | After the drive-away time; most drivers within two hours |
| Camera calibration | 30 minutes to 2 hours | When it is complete |
| Side window replacement | 30 to 60 minutes | Straight away |
| Back glass replacement | One to two hours | Once the adhesive cures; no rear defroster for 24 hours |
| Windshield chip repair | Often less than 30 minutes (Impex’s Concord page) | Straight after |
Impex’s auto glass page also says that many installations need 30 to 60 minutes before the car is safe to drive, that in some cases waiting several hours or even up to 24 hours is recommended, and that you should always confirm the exact safe drive-away time with your technician.

The first 24 hours
Driving is allowed after the drive-away time, but the adhesive keeps curing for longer. For the first day, Impex asks drivers to:
- not wash the car, and keep it out of car washes and high-pressure water;
- not slam the doors, because the air pressure in the cabin pushes on the new glass;
- avoid harsh bumps where they can;
- leave the retention tape on until told to remove it.
Impex’s homepage adds that a car with ADAS should be kept on a level surface with the right tyre pressure, because sensor alignment can be affected by changes in ride height or angle.

Calibration and the drive-away time
If your car has a forward facing camera at the top of the windshield, it is usually calibrated after the new glass goes in. I-CAR describes a static calibration, with targets in front of the parked car, and a dynamic one, where the car is driven at or below a set speed for a set time or distance. Impex says it completes both static and dynamic calibrations in one visit, on site, right after the replacement. The technician sets the order of the steps for your car, so the glass bond and the calibration both get the time they need.

Planning the day in Concord
With a mobile job, the drive-away time happens where the car is parked. That makes it easy to plan: book the visit for a morning or afternoon when you do not need the car, at home or at work, and let the time pass there. If the car is your only way to an appointment, leave a margin. On a day of steady rain, a garage or carport keeps the visit on; an open lot may mean a new time. Read mobile auto glass in Concord for what the visit needs.
Signs the new glass needs a look
- Wind noise at speed that was not there before.
- Water inside after rain or a wash, at the edge of the glass.
- A lane or braking assist warning light on the dash.
- Distortion when you look through the glass.
- Trim or moulding lifting away from the glass.
Any of these is a reason to call Impex and have the job checked, rather than wait and hope it settles. A small leak or a noise found in the first days is far easier to put right than one found months later. For the replacement itself, see windshield replacement in Concord, NC.
