Windshield repair in Concord, NC: chips and short cracks

Windshield repair in Concord, NC is the small job that saves the big one. When a stone leaves a chip or a short crack in the windshield, Impex Auto Glass can often fill it with resin at your car, so the glass stays in and the break stops growing. Impex has no shop in Concord: the technician comes to your home or work, and the nearest Impex shop is in Charlotte.

Cracks running out from one impact point in a dark pane of glass

This page covers what can be repaired and what cannot, how a repair is done, why a chip is worth fixing soon, and what to do in the hours after a stone hits. If the crack is long, reaches the edge or sits right in front of the driver, go to windshield replacement in Concord, NC instead.

Windshield repair Concord NC: what can be repaired

Two things decide it: how big the damage is and where it is. The industry repair standard, ROLAGS (the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard), says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. It defines a short crack as six inches or less, a long crack as more than six inches, and an edge crack as one that reaches an edge of the glass.

Impex’s own guidance is more cautious and more practical: a repair may be possible when the chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass. For chips it uses a quarter as a rule of thumb: a chip smaller than a quarter can often be repaired. Another common rule of thumb in the trade is the dollar bill: damage shorter than six inches, about the length of a dollar bill, is likely repairable.

The breakUsually
A chip smaller than a quarter, away from the edgeRepair
A short crack of six inches or lessOften a repair
A single line crack longer than six inchesJudged on the glass: ROLAGS allows up to 14 inches, many are replaced
Any crack that reaches the edgeReplacement
Damage right in the driver’s line of sightUsually replacement, because a repair leaves a mark
Several breaks, or damage through the inner layerReplacement

Rules of thumb

The quarter and the dollar bill are rules of thumb, not standards or laws. North Carolina has no statute or inspection rule that sets a crack size.

How a chip is repaired

A windshield is laminated: two sheets of glass bonded to a plastic layer. A stone chips or cracks the outer sheet, and air and dirt get into the break. A repair works by getting that air out and putting clear resin in.

  1. The break is cleaned. Loose glass and dirt are taken out of the impact point.
  2. A tool is fixed over the chip. It seals against the glass so resin can be forced into the break and air drawn out of it.
  3. Resin fills the break. The resin flows into the chip and any short legs running from it.
  4. The resin is cured. It hardens and bonds the glass together again.
  5. The surface is finished. Excess resin is removed and the spot is polished level with the glass.

Impex’s Concord page says a windshield repair often takes less than 30 minutes. A good repair stops the break from spreading and makes it much less visible, but it rarely disappears completely, which is why a chip right in front of the driver is often better replaced.

Why fix a Concord windshield chip soon

A chip is a weak point in the glass, and glass moves with temperature. A car that sits all afternoon in an open lot near Concord Mills or at a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway comes back with hot glass; a cold morning followed by the defroster on full does the opposite. Each change puts stress on the edges of a chip, and that is when a small star turns into a crack across the windshield. Bumps, potholes and a door slammed hard do the same.

Once a crack runs to the edge, or across the driver’s view, the windshield usually has to be replaced. A repair costs less, takes less time, keeps the original glass and its seal, and on a car with a forward camera it avoids the calibration that a new windshield brings.

The first hours after a stone hits

  • Note where and when it happened, and photograph the chip with a coin for scale.
  • Put a piece of clear tape over the chip to keep water and dirt out until the repair.
  • Keep the defroster and the air off the glass at full blast, and do not pour hot or cold water on it.
  • Skip the car wash until the chip is repaired.
  • Close the doors gently and avoid rough roads where you can.
  • Call Impex, or send the form with the photo, so the chip is looked at before it spreads.

Concord windshield repair or a new windshield?

Choose repair when the break is small, shallow, away from the edges and out of the driver’s direct view. Choose replacement when the crack is long and still moving, touches an edge, has several branches, or sits where the repair mark would bother you every day. If you are not sure, a photo with a coin beside the chip is enough for Impex to tell you which it is likely to be.

Rock chip repair and Concord’s roads

Most chips come from stone thrown up by another vehicle. I-85 is eight lanes through Concord, I-485 runs along the Cabarrus-Mecklenburg line and US 29, US 601 and NC 73 run through the city, and all of them carry trucks. North Carolina’s covered-load rule, G.S. 20-116(g), requires trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone to keep the load six inches below the sides and covered with a tarp. Keeping a longer gap behind a truck that is shedding stone is the simplest way to avoid the next chip. The article on NC’s covered-load law for gravel trucks explains the rule.

Paying for a windshield repair

A chip is glass breakage, and the NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass and missiles or falling objects under comprehensive coverage, which pays less any deductible. Whether a claim is worth making for a repair depends on your deductible and your policy’s glass terms, so ask your insurer how it treats a repair. A comprehensive glass claim is not an at-fault accident and adds no SDIP points, though insurers may look at how often you claim. You choose the shop under G.S. 58-3-180. See insurance and claims.

Does a chip fail the NC inspection?

No NC rule sets a chip or crack size. The annual safety inspection under G.S. 20-183.3 checks the wipers, not the glass itself. A chip in your line of sight is still worth fixing for safety, and it is cheaper to fix before it becomes a crack.

Questions people ask

Can a 12 inch crack in a windshield be repaired?

The ROLAGS repair standard lists single line cracks up to 14 inches as repairable, so 12 inches is not ruled out by length alone. A crack that reaches an edge, branches or crosses the driver’s view is usually replaced.

How long does a windshield chip repair take?

Impex’s Concord page says a windshield repair often takes less than 30 minutes. The technician comes to your car, so there is no trip to a shop.

Is windshield repair worth it?

For a small chip away from the edge, usually yes. It keeps the original glass and seal, costs less than a new windshield and, on cars with a forward camera, avoids the calibration that comes with a replacement.

Will the chip disappear after repair?

Not entirely. A good repair stops the break spreading and makes it much less visible, but a faint mark usually stays, which is why chips right in front of the driver are often replaced.

Can I drive with a chipped windshield?

You can, but a chip can spread with heat, cold and bumps. Cover it with clear tape, keep the defroster off it and have it repaired soon.
