Repair or replace: what decides it
Most people want to know first whether the glass can be saved. Impex’s own rule is that a repair may be possible when a chip or crack is small, shallow and away from the edges of the glass, and that large or deep damage, or damage that reaches the edge, is safer to replace. Impex uses a quarter as a rule of thumb for chips: smaller than a quarter is often repairable.
The industry standard for windshield repair, ROLAGS (the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard), says stone breaks up to two inches across and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. It calls a crack of six inches or less a short crack, one over six inches a long crack, and one that reaches an edge an edge crack. Size is only part of it: where the damage sits matters just as much, because a repair in front of the driver’s eyes still leaves a mark.
A chip left alone can spread into a crack, and a crack that runs into the edge or the driver’s view usually means new glass. If a stone has just hit, the page on windshield repair in Concord, NC says what to do in the first hours.
Rule of thumb, not a law
The quarter and the six-inch figure are rules of thumb used across the trade. North Carolina has no statute that sets a crack size, so the decision is about safety and the glass, not a legal limit.

The camera behind the glass
Many cars on Concord roads have a forward facing camera mounted at the top of the windshield. I-CAR, the collision repair training body, says that camera runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control, and that removing the windshield is one of the events that can require the camera to be aimed again. Requirements differ by year, make and model, which is why the procedure is looked up for each car.
There are two ways to calibrate. A static calibration sets targets in front of the parked car and runs an aiming procedure with a scan tool. A dynamic calibration drives the car at or below a set speed for a set time or distance, and it can need dry roads without heavy traffic or many curves. Some cameras need both. Impex says it performs ADAS calibration on site right after windshield replacement, static and dynamic in one visit, and that most calibrations take between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Front radar is a different part. It sits in or behind the front bumper or grille, not in the windshield, so a windshield job does not by itself mean radar work. Glass claims in North Carolina, in short
Glass damage in North Carolina normally goes under comprehensive coverage, which the NC Department of Insurance calls Other Than Collision. Its list of comprehensive losses includes missiles or falling objects and breakage of glass, and the coverage pays less any deductible. So unless your policy has its own glass terms, your comprehensive deductible applies. Some policies include full glass coverage; check yours.
Under G.S. 58-3-180 a policy covering damage to a motor vehicle has to let you choose the repair service, and the insurer owes the same amount whichever you pick. An insurer that recommends a shop has to tell you that you are not obliged to use it. Impex says it works with all major insurance providers and can handle the claim with your insurer. NC rules that touch your glass
North Carolina’s annual safety inspection, set out in G.S. 20-183.3, checks your wipers, not the glass itself. The wipers have to work under G.S. 20-127(a), and the inspection rule (19A NCAC 03D .0536) fails wipers that do not operate freely, cannot clear rain and snow, or have missing or damaged blades or arms. A crack in your line of sight is still a safety problem, and it is the reason to fix the glass, even though no NC rule sets a crack size.
- Safety glass: G.S. 20-135 makes it unlawful to knowingly drive an NC-registered vehicle made on or after January 1, 1936 without safety glass in its doors, windows and windshield.
- Window tint: a windshield may be tinted only along the top, no more than five inches down or to the AS1 line, whichever is longer; the other windows must let through at least 35% of light (G.S. 20-127). Tint was taken off the safety inspection from December 1, 2025 (S.L. 2025-47), but the limits still apply on the road.
- Covered loads: G.S. 20-116(g) requires trucks over 7,500 pounds carrying rock, gravel or stone to keep the load six inches below the sides and covered with a tarp, because loose stone is a road hazard.

If it has a forward camera at the top of the windshield for lane or braking assist, usually yes. I-CAR lists windshield removal as an event that can require the camera to be aimed. Impex calibrates on site after replacement.
How soon can I drive after the windshield is replaced?

Will a cracked windshield fail the NC inspection?
